Bees often make honey using multiple different flowers and plants. This means different locations and plant types in the area may result in different nectar and pollen found in your honey, even if you bought the same type of honey.

There are some types of honey that are monofloral (made from one type of plant), however. Although, this means that these delicious and special honeys may be in danger of disappearing if the plants are in danger as well. For example, the Ohi’a tree which the unique Hawaiian honey Ohi’a Lehua Blossom honey comes from is in danger of a fungal disease that may be spread by careless tourists. If we are not careful, we might loose our special honeys, and hurt the precious habitat many species depend on.

And of course, bees are vital for honey production. As well as the danger to the plants, we must be aware of the danger to the bees. Their decline due to habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and disease threatens honey production and the broader ecosystem.
